How to Buy Best TV – Television Buying Guide
Before you begin your quest to find yourself the Best TV in India 2022, there are some individual features like sound, display, operating systems, and more that you need to understand rather deeply to avail the best viewing experience possible! So scroll away.
1. Normal TV vs. Smart TV
The normal TVs have been around for several years, and now they are called “dumb TVs” against the “smart” ones that have entered the market. The regular TVs could only do one thing, and that is to receive an HDTV antenna or A/V source signal. Now there was a time when those were the only viewing options available, but now the tech experts have got something a lot smarter than that.
Similar to smart home devices and smartphones, Smart TVs offer you a connection to the internet and also bridge you with a variety of different applications. You can wonder how much this widens your entertainment choices from Hulu to Netflix or even playing some of your favorite games. You can also access your social media through smart TVs and also control the gadgets around your house, including the Google and Alexa compatible devices!
2. Operating System
Here are some of the operating systems currently available on the market that can create an immersive viewing experience for you!
Android TV
Android TV is one of the most common types of operating systems that you can find throughout the world. However, you may find many variations of this OS within different brand executions.
While many other TV platforms opt for more of a simplistic and minimalistic structure, Android fills the screen with many kinds of content. This can range from some Sony-selected content, Amazon Video, Netflix, and links to even the Google Play Store and so on. It can also help you connect your phones and tablets to the TV while also enjoying some of the Google Assistant benefits with its very own Android TV integration.
These TVs also have another feature that catches a lot of attention: the Chromecast built-in, which simplifies streaming through your Android devices.
Roku TV
Although you get some of the best parts of the Roky set-top boxes in this OS, it also offers you a couple of added features that you will find nowhere else. For instance, all you have to do is connect an HDTV antenna to your Roku TV and enjoy the EPG or Electronic Program Guide from the Roku ecosystem.
Roku TV has also kept a good distance from all the never-ending quarrels between Apple, Google, and Amazon. You will also spot many popular apps from all kinds of providers, unlike the more popular Amazing Fire TV that does not offer the Youtube app.
The universal search function is another feature that comes with the Roku TV, along with a customized feed of all the shows you follow and love. These tops with a private listening mode too! Several manufacturers like Element, Philips, RCA, Hitachi, Hisense, and many more offer Roku TV televisions. Similar to all the Roku products, you will also be able to install the private channels.
WebOS TV
WebOS is a TV operating system by LG, and it has a very curious history after all. Because of its elegant and easy-to-use interface, 2014 saw the rise of this OS as a leading smart TV operating system. Since 2014 itself, LG has been gradually updating and modifying the OS, and now you can spot this system in everything, including washing machines, projectors, water purifiers, and refrigerators.
The launch bar at the end of the screen is what this operating system revolves around. You will find all the apps and settings on the bar. You can also customize this bar to arrange the apps according to their frequency of use.
It is also extremely easy to hook up keyboards, mics, and all other important peripherals, as this WebOS is compatible with Bluetooth. Miracast, which is a cordless version of HDMI, is also compatible with this OS.
Other features worthy of taking note of are live apps, which can help you pause content in a particular app and use another app with ease. What you also have here is a 360-degree video playback that comes with an OLED image gallery. Isn’t that great?
WebOS is a clear winner because it is clean and crisp!
Tizen OS
The Linux Foundation is a Linux-based operating system that has developed the TizenOS. Samsung devices are the only place you will find the TizenOS. You can find it in all of the company’s products, including the air purifier, air conditioners, ovens, cameras, and of course, TVs.
Although there was a time when TizenOS had gained a bad reputation following the “Spygate” conspiracy of Samsung in 2015. However, we believe that these are the issues of the past, and we should let the bygones be gone! And to be honest, Tizen gives us a lot to be desired as a smart TV OS.
When we talk about the aesthetics of the OS, we believe this system is fine. It has certainly taken inspiration from the WebOS because of the horizontal bar at the bottom with the information of all the apps.
Now we can discuss the criticism in two parts, the first being that it may not be as intelligent as the other operating systems we have discussed on the list here. For instance, Roku learns and remembers what you like and suggests content accordingly from all the apps installed in the OS. While TrizenOS here only suggests all the apps that you haven’t opened in a while. Now that is certainly not as inspiring.
Talking about the second part, many people suggest and accuse the app of being too simple. While systems like WebOS strike a great balance, and many tech-savvy users appreciate the fun settings in all the buttons and submenus!
Fire TV Edition
Amazon Fire TV Edition is quite a new kid on the block, and as you can pick up from the name itself, it is a smart TV OS version of the popular and loved Amazing Fire TV devices! Currently, you only find this Fire TV edition on the Element and Toshiba televisions.
Access to Amazing Alexa also becomes easier with this Fire TV Edition. Similar to Google Assistant, it can help you control all your smart devices while also updating you on weather and news, and also interact with all the apps that make your routine easier.
Talking about the content, you will be limited to the apps that you can find on the Amazon Appstore. However, even though this is based on Android, you will not be able to access Google Play Store. Nonetheless, most of the mainstream apps will be available to you, apart from YouTube.
But remember how you can sideload apps in all the Fire TV devices? Well, the Fire TV Edition is no different, and all you will need to do is get your hands on the APK version of the app you want to install.
3. Display
One of the most important aspects of a TV is its display. Here are some of the display types and different screen resolutions for you to choose from!
Display Type
LED: One of the first LCD TVs made use of CCFLs, also known as cold cathode fluorescent light, as their backlights. But as soon as LEDs entered the market, they were soon a preferable option for the industry and they switched soon! And that is when the “LED TV” was born. Basically, at this very moment, all the LCD TVs you know are LED TVs. This is because LEDs have been known to consume less energy, and depending on the number of LEDs used, you can immensely increase the control over the brightness and contrast of the image.
QLED: If you take any LED or Mini-LED TV and add a layer of quantum dots right behind the LCD matrix, then that TV will turn into a QLED TV. These quantum dots are nanoparticles that have a great quality of being emissive when hit with light. LEDs tend to create natural blue light, but QLED layers can help compensate for it and create more natural colors. The more the brightness, the better the display will enhance.
OLED: OLED, or organic light-emitting diode, is an emissive display that comes with many benefits. But the one that stands out is the fact that when a pixel does not produce any light, it goes pitch black, Therefore, not only is the best and deepest blacks produced by OLED displays, and they do not suffer from any bleeding lights. Light bleeding means that a bright area spills and enters the area that is supposed to be dark or black. Yes, many companies sell OLED TVs, but only one company provides them the OLED panels, which is LG Display. However, there is still a difference because every company uses its picture processing technology.
Mini-LED: The bigger improvement than stepping up from the CCFLs to LEDs was to make those particular LEDs even smaller and smaller. Let’s take an example here, if you take a 75-inch TV, you will be able to fit around 25.000 of mini-LEDs in them. This provides more control over the brightness and contrast than the OLED’s emissive pixels are capable of. Therefore, it is easy to say that even if there is only one mini-LED TV out there, there is a huge possibility of many more entering the market shortly.
Micro-LED: MicroLED is another kind of emissive display that needs to be acknowledged and deserves recognition. This is because of two major reasons. First, modular design is used here that can offer resolutions of around 16 megapixels for TVs as huge as 17 feet tall! Now that is enormous! The second reason is that it is the brightest display technology that you can find currently. However, only Samsung and Sony sell them as of now.
Screen Resolution (HD/Full HD/4k/8k)
So, what is resolution? Resolution is the number of pixels that create an image in a display, and this is described in terms of vertical columns and horizontal rows. The more the number of pixels, the better and sharper the picture’s detail is going to be. Therefore, higher resolution is always better!
A TV buying guide can simply not be complete without mentioning resolution and its importance in creating an immersive experience to the watcher. For a very long time, a resolution of 1920 x 1080, also known as full HD, was a standard that most TVs had. And it still is a very common resolution found across the world. However, right now, many manufacturers are shifting toward 4K or UHD. The models with 4K resolutions have pixels of more than 4 times as compared to the current HDTV screens. Imagine that it is around 3840 x 2160 pixels or 2,160 horizontal lines.
One of the best benefits that you can get out of 4K TVs is that even the small objects on the screen will be bestowed with more detail, including better and sharper text. All these benefits can be subtle, but the image can appear richer and better than HDTV. This also lets you watch the screen easily from a short distance without straining your eyes.
The Ultra HD video has an amazing look and feel, and currently, you can find them in many kinds of TVs on the market. Many online streaming services have started incorporating them, for instance, Netflix, Amazon Video, and even Youtube! However, the Blue-ray discs are far more common to be found in standard Full HD resolution than the 4K one.
Now comes the 8K TVs, and trust us when we say that the first wave that already hit the market. If you are aware of Samsung’s Q900 8K TV that you know what we are talking about. Another one that has been making the rounds is LG’s 88-inch Z9 OLED. And you should be sure that you’ll be seeing more of them by 2022.
As the name suggests, the 8K resolution is quadruple that of the 4K resolution sets, and it is certainly a long jump into amazing picture quality that we have never witnessed before. However, we wouldn’t recommend the 8K sets any time soon, but we can surely consider and rely on the 4K TV sets!
Verdict: If you are looking to invest your money in something full-proof then you should opt for the 4K or Ultra HD resolution. It is becoming increasingly popular and will soon become the standard!
Refresh Rate (Higher is Better)
A refresh rate refers to the number of times an image of the screen is refreshed or updated per second. The standard is 30 times per second as that is how many frames are shot when you record a videotape. This may as well be more information than you’re seeking, but a film is generally shot at 24 frames per second, and this means that it needs to be converted to video before releasing or broadcasting on television.
For this reason, more frames have been developed by using the parts of the existing frames. With the old analog TVs, this was hardly a problem because a little room for signal problems and blurring was always left. However, with the new digital systems, even a slight change or difference creates very evident errors on the screen.
The solution here is to increase the refresh rate to 120 times per second, and this is a simple multiplication of 24 and 30. This way, any film short at 24 frames can have each of its frames be refreshed around 5 times per second. This can increase the overall quality of the video and also provide a cleaner and sharper picture. You will find some TVs on the market that are promising a 240 Hz refresh rate, but we wouldn’t recommend you go too far. We’d rather you stick to a 60 Hz or 120 Hz refresh rate.
High Dynamic Range (HDR)
HDR 10: A US-based consumer electronic association called the Consumer Technology Association was the first one to announce HDR 10. But what does it do? Well, the HRD 10 standard is responsible for sending static metadata to the video stream. This is encoded information on the color calibration settings which help look a picture real. The HDR 10 is capable of producing around 1000 units of peak brightness.
HDR 10+: Like many technological inventions, Samsung has brought its very own premium HDR format which is called HDR10+. And this is for all of its smart TVs. You can avail of really good viewing experience with the HDR10+ format, however, it is indeed far less common than the Dolby vision.
Dolby Vision: If there is a demand on the market right now in the world of TVs, it is Dolby Vision. This technology has been patented by the same people who invented the Dolby noise reduction and surround sound. This HDR format has a strict set of criteria to meet to display the HDR content. But there’s no doubt that Dolby Vision is currently leading the game!
HLG: Hybrid-Log Gamma or HLG is the very own form of HDR for the satellite and cable TVs. Therefore, you should certainly anticipate them popping up in the movies and even live TVs anytime soon!
IMAX Enhanced: IMAX Enhanced is a proprietary standard that has been brought in by the IMAX into the market. As of now it is not as accessible and we do not know what the future of these new formats is going to have on the market, but we must watch out for them.
4. Display Size
Here are some aspects you need to understand about the screen size, resolution, as well as placement of the TV.
Screen Size & Resolution
The first thing you must remember is the fact that TVs are always measured diagonally. So therefore, for a 42-inch screen, the measurement runs from one corner of the set to the opposite corner. Another thing you have to keep in mind is the resolution of the TV. This is because the higher the resolution is going to be, the closer you will be able to sit. For instance, if you sit close to a 4K TV that is 3840 x 2160, then you will require a 1080p TV.
This is a very important aspect to understand when you are thinking about the size of the screen because if you can sit close to the TV, you do not need to hog up more space for a better viewing experience.
Room size and TV position
Another important consideration is the size of the room you’re going to place the TV on, as well as the position of the TV. Now, as long as you do not have the furniture screwed or fixed into the wall, and you have the heart to move it, you will have some flexibility in the size of the TV you can get for yourself.
The question of the position of the TV is one that should always be contemplated. Think about whether you are planning to include a stand or simply mount it on the wall. If you opt for the former, you will be able to place the TV closer to yourself and shorten your viewing distance. Make sure to pay attention to the strength and depth of the TV set before picking any furniture to place it on.
While if you’re going for the latter and simply handing it on the wall, you can surely add maybe a foot or even more to your viewable distance. This can mean you can opt for TVs as large as 72-inches.
5. Connectivity:
These are the connectivity options available on the TVs right now:
HDMI
HDMI or High Definition Multimedia interfaces are connectors and what they do is transmit uncompressed video and audio data. All you need is one cable, and you can enjoy amazing and high-quality sound and visuals for your entertainment. You can use some of the cables to also connect devices to the internet via your TV through an Ethernet channel.
If we are to describe the HDMI sockets, we would say they are flat and thin slots that come with angled edges to denote the bottom and top of the port. Many TV sets that are found on the market come with two or even three or four of them. They are wonderful and come in handy when you want to connect your Blu-ray or DVD players. Or even game consoles!
Bluetooth
This is a connection used very often in hooking up the audio devices to TV sets. If you are a regular user or even have Bluetooth sound systems in your house, you might want to look for this feature in your new TV set.
USB
You will spot many modern TVs with at least a couple of USD slots or ports the same way you find on a computer. If you want to show some holiday snaps or videos on your computer, you can plug it into your TV and voila! Many TVs that you find might also play music and video files from any USB stick or even hard drive.
VGA
A VGA is also a connector and comes in a flat plug that has curved edges to denote the bottom and top. These cables are often blue and come with 15 pins and screw holes from the left to the right. Hooking up a computer and a monitor is one of the most common uses of a VGA connection. However, any TV that has a VGA connection and very easily can be connected to a computer as well.
RCA Port
These connectors are also known as cinch or phono connectors. Previously, they were very common but since the rise of the HD media, it has plummeted. But you should still find these ports on some TVs. These cables can only transmit a standard definition video, and this is why we guess it lost its commonality. This usually comes in a pair of three cables which are white, red, and yellow, respectively. Here you have one cable for video and two for audio.
WiFi
Yes! Smart TVs are on a rise, and they are becoming more and more common with each passing day. But you know what you need to have access to all the online and smart features? It is an internet connection. As most people have WiFis at home now, most TVs are also equipped to connect to this home network wirelessly.
Whenever you decide to get your new smart or wireless-capable TV, you must connect it to your WiFi or network while setting up. This can usually be done automatically. Simply pop in your wireless key!
6. Sound Quality
This is one of the shortest segments in the buyer’s guide but a very important one indeed. When you’re looking for good TVs, paying attention to sound quality should be a priority. As we have discussed earlier, the visuals are important; the sound is a companion that needs to stand out for the TV experience to be immersive and high-quality.
When checking the sound quality, pay some heed to the sound wattage offered by the particular TV. The thumb rule here is “higher the wattage, louder the sound.” However, you don’t want your ears to bleed from the sound too, so for a high-quality clean sound, many people opt for TVs with Dolby Digital sound systems amongst other technologies.
If you are hung up on a TV with a lower wattage, you can still add a Soundbar to it to compensate for the sound quality.
7. Best TV Brands in India 2022
Which are the leading brands making the best TVs in the world right now? Check below:
Samsung Televisions
This is no shocker for anyone who follows Techworld. Samsung has been a leading company in the TV industry, considering its top market position year through the year. The sleek and thin built of the Samsung TVs have gained quick popularity within the crowd and it is here to stay for a long time.
Although the company premium QLED systems have always struggled to replace the place of previous OLED models in the average consumer’s heart, it is still overall one of the best on the market. These TVs are typically designed well and come with many high-end features that any tech nerd is going to fall for.
Sony Televisions
Sony may not be a dominant player in many countries, but it has a solid fan-base in India 2022 when it comes to TVs. The “BRAVIA” or Best Resolution Audio Video Integrated Architecture was spun out by the brand which compensated for its VAIO laptop business that was struggling.
LG Televisions
For over 5 years, LG OLED TVs have been attracting a lot of popularity and have been considered as one of the best TVs in the market. OLED or Organic Light Emitting Diode operates differently and better than the previous LED technology, and we have discussed the same before!
TCL Television
Okay, so if you haven’t heard about the TCL then you’re definitely in for a huge surprise. Many brands on the market do not make it to the mainstream. Some brands like SuperSonic, Element, or even Insignia might be in your mind, but if you ask us, they are always a little unreliable and we do not recommend them. But TCL is a brand you can get behind!
Hisense Televisions
Hisense TVs have seen such great heights in a short time, and it is certainly because of their continuous slog to perfection. The company currently owns a significant market share throughout the world. The way to describe Hisense TVs would be simple and high-quality TVs. This might be up your alley if you are a fan of minimalistic and straightforward technology.
