Why We Should Worried About Coronavirus?
In December 2019, there is an unknown deadly virus named CoronaVirus that has been detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan, causing the death of more than 100 people by lung diseases. There are more than 4500 cases that have already been confirmed affected by this virus, and the number is rising with time. This is the ultimate high alert to the world to take some serious action or precaution about it.
Before finding some way-out, take a quick look at this Coronavirus closely to get more insight about this deadly virus.
What is Coronavirus?
Coronavirus is a family of seven viruses. Only six of them are known, but the seventh one is new and is still unknown. In 2002, Coronavirus killed 774 people out of 8098 people who are infected due to acute respiratory syndrome known as Sars.
Symptoms of Coronavirus Infection :
- Sore throat
- Dry or Mucus Cough
- Runny nose
- Shortness of breath
- Not feeling well
The main symptom of the virus starts with a fever that is followed by a dry cough. After one week, this fever leads to breathing shortness. The patients after this stage need to be admitted to the nearby hospital. Almost one out of four cases are severe and may even kill the infected person. Runny nose and sneezing are other indications of this disease.
According to Professor Mark Woolhouse of the University of Edinburgh, today’s symptoms of Coronavirus are more like cold, but it is not very severe as Sars. WHO (World Health Organization) has declared it as an emergency but still has not decided to confirm it as an international health emergency like Ebola and Swine Flu.
How deadly is Coronavirus?
Almost 100 people have expired due to Coronavirus in China.
However, there are still no official reports about how many people have passed away due to this poisonous virus.
Where is the Origin of this Virus?
According to Professor Jonathan Ball, who is a virologist at the University of Nottingham, the outbreak of the Coronavirus may be from the reservoir of an animal. Most of the outbreak of the virus has been from the South China Seafood Wholesale market in Wuhan. SARS are originated in bats and then carried on to the civet cats which in turn are passed onto human beings. Mers (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) has taken almost 858 lives out of 2494 recorded infected people since 2012. The origin of Mers is from the dromedary camel.
Which Animal is the Carrier of the Coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are mainly present in sea mammals like Beluga Whale. Sometimes this virus is also present in wild animals like bats, chickens, snakes, and rabbits. According to the report by the researchers, it is found that this new Coronavirus is closely similar to the ones that were found in the Chinese Horseshoe bats. But this does not mean that these bats are the direct sources of the virus.
According to some other sources the assumption is the carrier of this virus is a snake but still, there is no evidence.
Why is China affected most?
Professor Woolhouse states that the density and size of the population in China are the main reason for the harbouring of the virus.
How easily can this virus spread Between People?
At the beginning of the outbreak of the Coronavirus in China, there was no proof of the spread of the disease among the people. But later, many such cases have been recorded. According to the reports of the scientists, it is revealed that each infected person passed the virus between 1.4 and 2.5 people. This number is known as the basic reproduction number of the virus. If the number is more than 1, then the virus is self-sustaining.
When are people mostly infected by the virus?
According to the scientists of China, it is predicted that the people are infected with the virus even before the symptoms started to appear. The incubation period between the spreading of the infection and the appearance of symptoms ranges from one to 14 days. Prof Wendy of Imperial College London from the infectious diseases department states that it is very common for the infectious diseases of the lungs to spread rapidly even without any symptoms. The virus can spread even during breathing and normal breathing of the infected person.
But the scientists are not a final stage to declare the Coronavirus as a pandemic disease across the globe like Swine Flu or Ebola. Thus it is becoming very difficult to prevent, stop or treat this disease which is completely symptomless during the incubation period.
How fast is Coronavirus Spreading in the world?
There is very little information about the rate of growth of this virus in China. But according to the experts, it is estimated than the actual number of infected people will be much higher than the figures that were predicted.
Last week, a report was published by the MRC center at the Imperial College London for the Global Infectious Disease Analysis. The report says that the outbreak of the Coronavirus in Wuhan has more cases of moderate or severely infected people with respiratory illness than those that are currently reported.
Another report has been announced by the Researchers of the Lancaster University that proposes that almost 11000 cases of Coronavirus have been reported to be infected in the year 2019.
How the Coronavirus can be mutated?
The virus can evolve and mutate with time. National Health Commission of China has warned the population that the transmission ability of the Coronavirus is becoming stronger day by day. But they were not clear about the risks that the mutations of the virus may pose on the people.
For further comments on the mutation of the virus, they have to watch more closely for some more additional time.
How to Prevent or Stop the Coronavirus?
The spreading of the virus cannot be stopped on its own. Only the Authorities of the Chinese government can prevent it. Still, no vaccine for Coronavirus has been invented to retard the spreading. There are only three options that can prevent the spreading of the virus to other people. They are as follows:
- Restricting the movement of the infected person
- Encouragement for proper hand wash and using sanitizers
- Treatment of infected patients in an isolated ward in the hospitals with proper protection
How the Authorities of China have reacted to the Coronavirus?
China’s government has put a complete ban and has quarantined Wuhan. Restrictions on travel are also implied in 12 other cities of China. Mass gatherings and famous tourist sites like The Great Wall of China have been closed until time unknown. Two new hospitals have been built in Wuhan with accommodation of 2300 people. Most of the workers of China are requested to work from home after the Lunar New Year Holiday end finishes up after Wednesday.
How the world is responding to this virus?
Most of the Countries in Asia have stopped screenings of travellers from Wuhan or China. WHO has already warned about the possibility of the worldwide breakout of the Coronavirus. Screenings have already been started in Hong Kong, USA, UK and Singapore for the passengers from China. If the symptoms take 2 weeks to appear, then the infected person could travel halfway around the world bypassing all the screenings before beginning to fell seriously ill.
How worried should the experts be About the Virus?
According to Dr. Golding, it is very hard to say how worried should everyone be until the scientists could get proper information about the virus. Confirmation of the actual source will help to prevent the transmission of the virus. Professor Ball adds that the world should always be worried about any virus or foreign body that can infect human beings as it can overcome the most complicated barrier.
Once it enters the cells of mankind, it starts replicating and generating mutations that give access to spread more effectively and become even more infectious.
Is there any way, treatment or vaccine to Prevent Coronavirus?
No there is still no proper treatment or vaccine to discontinue this virus. However, scientists from every corner of the world are engaged to develop any prevention method. They are predicting that if they are successful in developing a vaccine for Mers which is also a type of Coronavirus, then developing a vaccine for Coronavirus will be an easier job.
Hospitals are also under the process of creating an antiviral drug to tests for the impact. However, a combination of the 2 drugs named ritonavir and lopinavir was successful in treating the epidemic of Sars.
This epidemic due to Coronavirus is spreading at an unbelievable rate. However, the world should be prepared to fight a potential pandemic at the global level. The Chinese authorities have announced to wear masks, avoid crowded transport, eat home-cooked meals and intake plenty of Vitamin C. These are the only preventive measures that can be taken to stop the spreading of this dangerous virus.
