People cannot live without ceiling fans in the summer season, especially in tropical regions. In those parts, ceiling fans operate almost 24 hours every day. Whenever someone is in the room, they will turn on the fans. Ceiling fans are one of the primary electrical appliances in tropical countries like India.
Nevertheless, do you have any idea how many units does a regular ceiling appliance consume? There is a BEE star rating for the ceiling fans as well. The cooling fans with BEE star ratings consume lower energy compared to the regular ceiling fan in the house. There is also a super-efficient ceiling fan that saves higher energy when compared to the 5-star rating fans. In this article, we will be comparing the different characteristics of these three fans to understand them in detail.
Regular Ceiling Fans
They are the conventional ceiling fans that contain an AC induction motor (ACIM) and consume around 75 to 90 watts. Most of the population use regular ceiling fans in their home. They include low manufacturing cost, and thus the price is lower than the other varieties. It comes with different speed settings of 1 to 5. Now you should have a clear idea of the amount of electrical consumption at different speeds. The formula to determine the electrical consumption of the regular ceiling fans is,

Now the electrical consumption depends on different factors like sweeping off the blades, age of the fan, ceiling height, dust presence on the blades, and the input voltage. To understand this concept better, we have compared the performance of two fans (one is eight years old, and another one is two years old). The readings are as follows.

The disadvantages of these ceiling fans are they include 80-year-old technology, coil burning, indifferent speed, and inefficient performance.
5 Star Rated BEE Fans
These power saving or energy-efficient fan models implement a minimum electronic technological level for reducing the power consumption. They are known as Bureau of Energy Efficiency or BEE rate 5-star ceiling fans and consume only 50 watts of power. They include an electronic step or fine-tuning regulator and are the result of the BEE standardization rules in the ceiling fan energy rating. The biggest fan manufacturers rework a regular ceiling fan with a high performing air delivery and lower electricity bill. Thus we can conclude that 5 star rated ceiling fans are more energy-efficient than regular fans. The table below will justify the following claims.
This comparison indicates that the electrical consumption of both regular fans and five stars rated BEE fans are the same when running at the initial speed. As the fan speed enhances, the air delivery of the appliance improves as well. We have seen that a 5 star rated fan consumes almost 70% or less electricity than the regular cooling appliance does while rotating at the highest speed.
Naturally, it also lowers the power consumption bill. It will be a huge benefit where you have to pay the electricity bill in the slab-wise structure. The five stars rated ceiling fans will help move to the lower slab, where the user will get the lower price benefit. The only disadvantage with these fans is that they are unable to fulfil the thermal comfort of the regular ceiling fan. The companies reduce air delivery to meet the lower energy consumption requirements.
Super Efficient Fans
Super efficient ceiling fans improve the semiconductor technology and consume 35 watts or lesser power with no compromise in the air delivery. These appliances include BDLC or Brushless motors, with 50% of power-saving properties and microcontrollers. It is a tiresome job to get up and change the fan speed or turn it off. The super-efficient solves this problem as it comes with an option for remote control. The fan consumes only 65% of the electricity at the highest speed compared to a 5 star rated fan. The power consumption is almost 47% when compared to the regular fan.
The only disadvantage of these fans is the initial cost that the user has to invest while buying the appliances, but the savings in the electricity bill will recover this cost within 2 years.

- When the electricity price is 5 INR per unit
- The electricity escalation cost is 4% in a year for the upcoming ten years.
- Calculations are for a specific fan.
- Electricity consumption is mentioned when the cooling appliance is running at the highest speed.

The initial buying cost of the regular fan might be the lowest. However, they consume the highest unit number. It makes it an expensive selection in the long run. The super-efficient fans are double the regular fans’ price but are almost 50% cheaper when you consider the total electricity consumption for the next ten years. The five stars rated BEE fans come with a well striking balance between these two. They come with an average buying cost and also consume much less power than the regular power. Keep in mind; it consumes higher energy than the super-efficient fans.
In the end, we will suggest avoiding regular fans and at least go for the 5-star BEE fans. But our highest recommendation is for super-efficient fans for the most obvious reasons. You can recover all your initial cost with this fan compared to the other two fans within three years.
